The ground beneath him is grass scattered with small flowers. Behind him the earth has been ploughed into long brown furrows, and beyond those there is a line of trees and a low range of mountains under a plain yellow sky. Two states of the same ground are drawn in one picture: soil already turned, and soil not yet planted.

His clothes are working clothes rather than court dress — a green tunic over a red undergarment, a belt, and a broad soft hat with a red cloth wound around it. Green for growth and red for the will to act, which are the two colours of the field and the sky he is standing between.

His feet are flat on the ground and his weight is evenly distributed. Compare the other three Pages and the difference is the whole card. The Page of Wands looks up the length of his staff. The Page of Swords is mid-stride with weather coming in behind him. The Page of Cups is being surprised by a fish. This one is not moving at all.

What the picture withholds is the thing everybody wants from it. The coin is in his hands. The ploughed earth is directly behind him. He has not put one into the other. Nothing has been planted. That is the honest content of the card: total absorption in the object, real ground available, and no action taken yet.
