Synastry compares two birth charts to each other. It looks at the angles between one person's planets and the other's — his Mars to her Venus, her Moon to his Sun — and at which area of each life the other person's planets land in. It describes what actually happens between two specific people, which sun-sign compatibility cannot.
What synastry is
Sun-sign compatibility asks one question with twelve possible answers, and everyone has already read theirs. Synastry asks a different question: not what you are like and what they are like, but what the two of you do to each other.
Those are not the same question and they do not have the same answer. Two people whose sun signs are supposed to clash can have a Moon sitting exactly on the other's Venus and be extraordinarily easy together. Two people the tables call ideal can have nothing between their charts at all — and that is its own diagnosis, usually of a couple who get on perfectly well and never quite catch fire.
What this page does is compute both charts properly and put them against each other. No sign averages, no compatibility percentage. A percentage is a made-up number and this page will not print one.
The two things it actually looks at
Two techniques, and each answers something the other cannot.
Inter-aspects are the angles between one person's planets and the other's. His Mars square her Venus is attraction with friction in it — a pull that keeps generating heat and argument in the same motion. Her Moon trine his Sun is ease: he does not have to be managed and she does not have to explain. The tighter the angle, the louder it is, which is why the orb is printed next to each one rather than hidden.
House overlays are quieter and often more decisive. Your planets fall into some area of their life and theirs into some area of yours, and that decides where the relationship happens. Somebody's Venus in your seventh house feels like a partner from the first week. The same Venus in your twelfth feels like a secret, whatever either of you intends. Overlays need both birth times, and when one is missing this page says so instead of picking a house.
The outer planets are deliberately left out of the comparison. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move so slowly that everyone born within a few years of you shares them, so an aspect between them describes a generation rather than a couple.
How to read what comes back
Enter both sets of birth details. Nothing is stored unless you ask a reader to read it.
What comes back is the list of real aspects between the two charts, tightest first, the house overlays if both birth times are known, and the four cards — each person's Venus and each person's Moon, on the minor arcana that rule their exact degrees.
Read the tight ones and ignore the rest. An aspect six degrees off exact is a footnote; the same aspect half a degree off is a fact about the relationship that both people would recognise from a description. And an empty list is a real answer, not a failure — it usually describes two people who are compatible in the ordinary sense and never quite ignite.
One warning worth stating plainly: synastry describes the shape of a connection, not whether to stay in one. A chart cannot tell you that somebody treats you well.
Questions people ask
Do we both need our birth times?

For the aspects, no — the planets are settled by the date except the Moon, which changes sign every two and a half days. For house overlays, yes, both. Missing a time removes the overlays and leaves the aspects intact, and the page tells you which half you are getting.
Why is there no compatibility percentage?

Because there is no honest way to compute one. A percentage requires deciding that a Venus trine is worth twice a Saturn square, and no such exchange rate exists — different traditions weight them differently and none of them can show their working.
What if there are no aspects between our charts?

That is a result rather than an error, and it is more common than people expect. It usually describes two people who get on perfectly well and never quite catch fire. The house overlays often matter more in that case.
Is a square between our charts bad?

It is friction, which is not the same thing. Mars square Venus is one of the most reliably magnetic contacts in synastry and one of the most argumentative; couples who last with it usually describe the same relationship as both. What squares are not is neutral.
Can synastry tell me whether to leave someone?

No, and anything that claims to is selling something. Synastry describes the shape of the connection between two charts. Whether a person treats you well is information you already have and no chart contains.
